I was privileged to be one of the invitees to attend a series of high-level events hosted by the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood (WRA) Global Secretariat and partner organizations to coincide the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on the 19th-26th September 2012. Dr. Osotimehin is a United Nations Under-Secretary-General and the Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. He wrote this opinion in support of Every Woman Every Child, a global movement spearheaded by UN and other global leaders to save the lives of women and children and improve the lives of millions more by 2015.

The launch two days ago (Wednesday) of the report of the United Nations Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children is a major milestone in Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s push to ensure the success of the Every Woman Every Child movement. It is now two years since the movement was launched in New York during the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit. Two Girl Guides from Nigeria and Hungary have written about what girls and young women in their countries are doing to tackle the issues of maternal health and child mortality. These accounts illustrate the importance of the UN's Every Woman Every Child campaign, and the World Thinking Day themes for 2013 – “together we can save children’s lives” and “every mother’s life and health is precious.” Read more...

When I was young, one of my best friends lived in my grandmother's village. I saw Chrissie every weekend as we made our way through childhood -- she in the village school and I in the town school. We finally came together as students in secondary school. Sadly, Chrissie studied with me for only one term, as her parents could not afford the school fee of $6. She returned to her village, married early and had more than a half-dozen children. Read more...

As world leaders focus on advancing efforts to save 16 million women and Children by 2015, The Tony Elumelu Foundation joins the “big push” on the  ‘Every Woman, Every Child’ campaign. Nigeria is working towards addressing the availability of quality healthcare delivery which is currently challenged by poor infrastructure and affects all, especially the most vulnerable in our society—a position mostly occupied by women and children. Children within the ages of 0 to 14 account for 41% of Nigeria’s population, with 51:49 percent men to women ratio for a population of 168 million people. Read more...
