Dr. Jotham Musinguzi a strong advocate of reproductive health and family planning was announced winner of the 2013 United Nations Population Award. Dr. Musinguzi is the Regional Director of Partners in Population and Development (PPD) Africa Regional Office (ARO) based in Kampala, Uganda.
Dr. Musinguzi played a major role in drafting the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994, and was actively involved in negotiations on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).He also played a major role in preparing the Maputo Plan of Action, which was adopted by the African Union in 2006 to help achieve the MDGs in Africa, and has, more recently, contributed to the success of the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning.
PPD is a southern-led, southern-run Inter-governmental Organization with a deep commitment to improving Reproductive Health, Population and Development. PPD’s Africa Regional Office which Dr. Musinguzi heads uses a south-south cooperation modality to achieve strong political leadership for reproductive health (RH), population and development through advocacy and policy dialogue, building networks and strategic partnerships in the region and sharing of experiences and best practices in Africa.
Dr. Musinguzi chairs the Board of Directors of Population Services International (PSI/PACE) Uganda. He is also currently a Trustee of the Population Council of New York as well as Commonwealth Medical Trust of London (Commat). Dr. Musinguzi was also a Board Member of the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) based in Nairobi, Kenya as well as having been Chair of the Board of International Council of Management of Population Programmes (ICOMP) based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Dr. Musinguzi was until February 2007 the Director of Uganda’s Population Secretariat housed in the Ministry of Finance. Dr. Musinguzi has served as a Senior Lecturer, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Makerere University Medical School. He has also served as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Mulago Hospital. Dr. Musinguzi is a former President of Uganda Medical Association as well as a former Board Member of PPD representing Uganda. Dr. Musinguzi has also served as a Board Member of Uganda’s National Drug Authority.
The Award is scheduled to be presented in June at a ceremony at the United Nations, New York.

Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office's (PPD ARO) mission is to provide a platform for the promotion and mobilization of resources for sexual and reproductive health, and population and development in Africa through four strategies:
1) policy and funding advocacy;
2) accountability for SRHR commitments;
3) networking and strategic Southern partnerships and;
4) south-South best practice transfer.
