In January, 2,500 global leaders, key decision-makers, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and youth from around the world gathered in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum. The theme of this year’s meeting was The Reshaping of the World: Consequences for Society, Politics and Business. Key issues included innovative ways to optimize funding for health programmes in developing and middle-income countries, closing the gender gap, and shaping future global policy.
Throughout the week, the importance of investing in girls and women was highlighted. An advocacy event around the United Nations Secretary-General's MDG Advocacy Group meeting called Scaling Up Success: Investing in Girls’ Empowerment for MDG Acceleration aimed to raise awareness about the long-term positive impact of girls’ empowerment for society and reinforce commitments and actions by business leaders and key policy makers for investing in education and health for girls. The social media campaign for the event under the hashtag #investingirls was trending on Twitter.
Women Deliver Board Member Saundra Pelletier also took some time to talk about the importance of investing in contraception and introduce a new woman-controlled contraceptive gel that WomanCare Global is launching called Amphora.
