"Adding It Up: The Costs and Benefits of Investing in Family Planning and Maternal and Newborn Health," a report released in late 2009 by UNFPA and The Guttmacher Institute, has just launched a motion graphics video to help advocate for increased funding for family planning and maternal and newborn care.
The "Adding It Up" report has been an invaluable tool for Women Deliver's advocacy efforts in 2010. It is the base from which we drew content for the Women Deliver Pocket Card (available in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic) for policymakers and advocates.
As the report says, we need to improve maternal and newborn care, and that would require more than doubling what we spend now.
But if we spent more on contraception, and still gave mothers and newborns the care they need, the total costs actually go down.
