ICPD and the Promises for Youth

Yesterday, we attended a luncheon on "The promises of the ICPD for Young People," sponsored by the Government of The Netherlands in conjunction with the IPPF. The panel discussed some really important topics like: youth friendly services; young women and abortion; youth participation; and delivering young people's SRHR programmes. The major take-away was that there are steps that governments have to take to realize the promises of ICPD. Specifically, governments need to:

  • Invest in youth (including putting young people on your delegation)
  • Empower youth people with both information and skills
  • Recognize and break down the barrier to sexual education services

While the panel laid out these steps for governments, it was much more difficult to talk about the advances and successes that have been made in actively including young people.

What do you think? What priority actions are needed between now and 2015 to see that ICPD commitments to young people are met?
