Good News on Preventing Cervical Cancer

Each year, over a quarter of a million women die from cervical cancer.  Of these women, around 80% live in the developing world.  Cervical cancer is caused by HPV, one of the most common STIs.   This week, Akimbo talks about different HPV tests (there's more than a PAP smear) and vaccines available.

In April, we covered a new HPV diagnostic test made by Qiagen with the developing world in mind.  The tests costs around $5, does not need refrigeration, and results can be available after three hours.  One day this could replace the PAP smear.
