Advocates for Youth Introduces ‘Time is Now’ Campaign

Advocates for Youth, an organization focused on helping young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health, has kick-started their “Time is Now” campaign. It was developed in collaboration with a youth advisory board of 40 young people from around the world, and revolves around changes for greater inclusion of gender and youth in the upcoming Rio+20 summit.

Rio+20, also known as the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, is taking place this June, 20 years after the first such conference on sustainable development in 1992, known as the Earth Summit. Many have called into question the lack of emphasis in the Zero Draft Document, on gender, youth, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and the role these factors play in the environment and sustainability, despite the known role of issues surrounding women, fertility, youth, and health rights in poverty, the environment, economy, and other sectors that are also important to sustainability.

The campaign page provides a petition for people to sign, as a method of calling upon the Rio+20 Secretariat to work for the recognition the importance of and link between youth SRHR and sustainable development in the upcoming Rio+20 discussions. The petition also seeks greater inclusion of youth SRHR in the Rio+20 outcomes document, and urges member states to include young SRHR advocates as part of delegations to Rio+20.

Also available on the campaign page are blog posts related to the upcoming Rio+20 as well as the connections of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) to the climate and our environment; a media library; and links to more resources.

More information about the campaign and Advocates for Youth is available on the website.

  1. I am very interest to join the Time is Now campaign. I think that it will be a great opportunity for me to join the organization and explore my latent talent as a young woman.

  2. i applaude the work that these group of young people ae doing. i believe that the more we stand by our beliefs the louder our voice is and i know that we will definitely be heard. i am no longer considered a young person as i am now over 30. but i see them and attend to them with regards to their various health needs so i know what it means to guide them in making informed and appropriate decisions as regards their SRHR. i would like to be involved in any way possible. wishing great success with the campaign
