Global Leaders Celebrate Two Decades of Progress for Girls and Women

Yesterday, the opening day of the 47th session of the United Nations (UN) Conference on Population and Development (CPD), Women Deliver and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in support of Every Woman Every Child, co-hosted an event in New York to call for political commitments to and investments in girls’ and women’s health and rights. This reception commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Egypt, where global leaders issued a visionary consensus prioritizing the health and rights of women and young people, including their sexual and reproductive health. Global Leaders Call for Greater Investments in Girls and Women

As world leaders congregate in New York for the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, policymakers, advocates, and experts convened a high-level event to focus on the need for greater global investment in reproductive health, education, and equality for girls and women.

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark delivered opening remarks at the event, “Invest in Girls and Women: Everybody Wins,” co-hosted by Women Deliver, The Permanent Mission of Denmark to the UN, Plan International, the Nike Foundation, and the UN Foundation. The event was in support of Every Woman Every Child, an initiative launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that aims to drastically improve the health of women and children around the world. 10 Young Leaders, 10 Promising Solutions to Benefit Girls & Women

Women Deliver Awards US$50,000 in Seed Grants to Young Advocates in Africa, Asia & Latin America

New York, NY – Today, in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, Women Deliver awarded seed grants of US$5,000 each to 10 young people to support projects aimed at advancing girls’ and women’s health and rights in their communities.

Women Deliver also launched an online voting competition that will allow the public to vote for the project they believe will have the greatest impact. Voting will close on March 20 at 5 PM EST, and the winner will receive an additional $500 for his or her project. Read more...

5,000 people expected to attend concert to promote girls’ and women’s health and rights

Kampala, Uganda, February 26 – It Takes Two will launch its national youth-focused family planning campaign at Talent Africa’s International Women’s Day concert on March 8. The concert will recognize the importance of women’s health and rights, and feature performances by international and local female artists, including Nyanda, Cindy Sany, Lilian Mbabazi and Irene Ntale among others. Low Level of Contraceptive Use in the Country Fuels High Rate of Unintended Pregnancy

An estimated 105,000 abortions occurred in Burkina Faso in 2012, the vast majority of which were clandestine procedures performed under unsafe conditions that jeopardize Burkinabe women’s health and lives. The finding comes in a new report, Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion in Burkina Faso: Causes and Consequences, released today by the Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population (ISSP) of the University of Ouagadougou and the U.S.-based Guttmacher Institute. According to the report, 43% of women who had an unsafe abortion experienced complications serious enough to require treatment, but many women did not receive the medical care they needed.
