Last week I had the rare opportunity of co-hosting a dinner to celebrate women as part of the Global Dinner Party to celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. The dinner was organized by the Nigeria Health Campaign of the White Ribbon Alliance in Nigeria in partnership with Save the Children Nigeria. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake, which is the largest to hit Japan since records began, hit the north-east of the country on 11 March 2011. It was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, and also triggered a massive tsunami, which has destroyed most of the cities and villages on the north-east coast of Japan. During periods following a major natural disaster, women often lose access to basic health services, as public health and clinical care infrastructure are disrupted. Read more...

Sometimes called the most dangerous place in the world for women, the Democratic Republic of Congo last month was the location of an extraordinary display of hope and courage by survivors of sexual violence. On Feb. 4, the doors opened to the City of Joy—a revolutionary community for survivors of sexual violence and rape that offers Congolese women shelter from war and a safe space to heal, rebuild, and reclaim their lives and communities.
