Irish Abortion Law Violates European Convention, Says Human Rights Court

Yesterday, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that despite Irish law allowing for abortions in cases which pose “real and substantial risk” to the life of the mother, in practice the government makes it impossible for women to obtain abortions in these circumstances. This ruling was in response to the case of a pregnant woman with a rare form of cancer who was forced to travel to Britain for an abortion after doctors in Ireland  were unwilling to inform her if her pregnancy was jeopardizing her health. The ruling found Ireland in violation of its own constitution and ordered the government to pay the woman 15,000 Euros, or about $20,000. Read more...

Tomorrow night, Friday 17th December 2010, ABC News will kick of a new series called, "Be the Change: Save a Life" at 10pm. Jill Sheffield Joins High-Level UN Commission on Women’s and Children’s Health

Jill Sheffield, President of Women Deliver, is joining a new UN high-level commission charged with developing an accountability framework that will link resources committed to women's and children's health with the results they are intended to achieve.

"Strengthening accountability is critical if we are to save the lives of more women and children," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "We must ensure that partners deliver on their promises but, in turn, it is crucial that they know whether investments are leading to sustainable progress.” Read more...
