Researchers Iqbal Shah and Elisabeth Ahman of the World Health Organization report in the current issue of Reproductive Health Matters that the number of women dying from unsafe abortion has decreased by approximately one-third, from 67,000 in 2003 to 47,000 in 2008. However, the number of unsafe abortions has increased from 19.7 million in 2003 to 21.6 in 2008. Today marks World AIDS Day, and with it comes reflections over both progress made and what lays ahead in preventing HIV/AIDS transmission, exploring treatment options for those infected, and removing stigma and discrimination from the disease. A new report by UNAIDS provides ground-breaking data from 182 countries, and is hailed by the Director of the World Bank’s Global HIV/AIDS Program, Dr. David Wilson, as “one of the most encouraging and substantive reports on the course of the epidemic we’ve seen in years.” Read more...
