The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has introduced a new tool in India to help health-care experts, policymakers, and local communities understand the causes of the high rates of maternal mortality across the country. The tool, known as the Maternal and Perinatal Death Inquiry and Response (MAPEDIR), has collected data and analyzed the cases of some 1,600 women.

US Legislation Passes in the Senate

WASHINGTON DC – The US Senate unanimously passed legislation this week that recognizes quality and affordable maternal health care as a basic human right. The legislation, introduced by Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) also calls on the US to make a stronger commitment to reducing maternal mortality both at home and abroad.
